Quite possibly, a fish fitting this description may not in fact be a loach at all, but a member of the Garra family. These are SE Asian fish and occasionally get mistaken for loaches. Below are a few examples. There are very many species, so it is advised that one researches the species one has, or asks about it on the Loaches Online Freshwater Forum. Many of our members keep these fish.
